This book examines the critical, cultural and historical contexts of the contemporary popular genre of fantasy fiction, arguing that the reasons underlying the genre's growth and popularity in the latter half of the twentieth century are due to its ability to express romantic ideologies critical of western cultural modernity in an entertaining narrative form.
