520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The book, the achievement of the campus novelists, makes a critical study of the british campus novel from 1950 to 1980.It makes an exhaustive study of five british campus novels.Campus novels as they are known today, came into existence in the 1950's.Mainly written by the angry young men,These novels were and still are concerned with educational institutions mainly colleges. The first campus novel-The Masters(1951) by C.P Snow is a serious novel with overtones of sadness in it.The Master of the college is dying of cancer and it is the election of the new novel.Kingsley Amis's lucky jim (1954) on the other hand,is a typical campus novel. It presents an entirely satirical-comic picture of a provincial college in which jim dixon is a temporary teacher in medieval literature. The main theme is the question whether his appoinment will continue or not.John wain's hurry on down(1954) is a typical product of the angry young men generation. The hero of the novel does not get respectable job despite of having university degree.Malcolm Bradbury's the history man(1975),deals with the story of a promiscuous couple.Love-interest is the main theme of this novel.Small world (1984) by David lodge is a global campus novel.Promiscuity,crime,pornography-nothing is left out in this very comprehensive book, ironically named small world. |
