Summary: In independent India, the education system has come a long way. However , there are some classes and groups, who are still far behind in literacy and education. The dalits are the unfortunate lot, who have not yet been fully equipped with knowledge. Over many a decade and specially after independence, a lot has been done by the Government for the upliftment of the downtrodden and the weak, including Dalits. Apart from the Government, private organisations and social activists have also made their contribution.
