520 _aObliquely based on an 1880 true event when a British crew abandoned steamship Jeddah, ferrying Muslim pilgrims, as she developed a leak on colliding with an underwater object. Jeddah was subsequently towed to safely, but her first mate was blamed for organizing the desertion of the passenger vessel. Lord Jim personifies the officer haunted by cowardice on abandoned his storm-affected ship Patna and not caring for her passengers bound for Mecca. He feels guilty for first jumping into lifeboat, and now faces an inquiry as the stranded ship is retrieved. Afterwards disgraced Jim, taking sundry shore jobs lands up as an agent at Patusan and becomes a respected favourite of chief Doramin.Trouble reappears in the form of European adventures who cause bloodshed and kill Doramin's son. As if to re-live his past, Jim offers to be shot by the grieving Doramin. Conrad's story is gripping tense in which the romantic day-dreamer, an obscure conquer of fame, Lord Jim discards his moral blindness to accept the reality.
